Steve’s Biographical

Biography

Steve Johnson

Steve Johnson is a painter, originally from England,  married and living in NW Indiana since 2002. His art is built on a deep appreciation for 20th century European art, from post-impressionism through all of the various forms of expressionism that defined the centuries art.

He started painting seriously aged around 30 in 1990 and at age 33 was teaching art and producing public works, mainly murals, in the Middle East for two years. The non academic nature of the region’s art had was a big influence causing him to seriously question what he saw as the over dependence upon technique in  the Western  visual arts and the masking effect that this has on the emotion that a work should convey.

From 1993 to 2001 Steve participated in many shows in the UK. This period culminated in a solo show at the Start Gallery, Fulham London. He also gained a BS degree in environmental biology at the University of Essex during this period.

Since living in the US, Steve and his wife Meg,  owned a gallery for three years and put on three art fairs at the Aquatorium, Miller Beach, NW Indiana, all between 2004 and 2007 He has also taught several courses in art  and mural painting to kids aged 11 – 17  at Gary Art Works, Gary Indiana.
